Last Monday, October 5, at the Manila Pianos Showroom at CW Home Depot in Makati City, the 26 contestants of Miss World Philippines 2015 showcased their various skills and talent during a preliminary competition leading to the grand coronation night at The Theatre of Solaire on October 18.
It was night befitting the arts: a swift sketch, heavenly music, heartfelt song renditions, authentic and fiery dance routines, plus a jaw-dropping magical number that elicited thunderous applause from the judges (that included Philippine ballroom dancing queen Becky Garcia and Philippines Daily Inquirer columnist George Sison) and audience alike.
“Save for one, this year’s contestants have prepared for the talent challenge,” Miss World Philippines national director Cory Quirino excitedly informed us.
The winner of the Talent Award will be announced during the grand finals.
As an unofficial judge, I would single out two ladies: Mia Allyson Hernandez Howell who did a fiery pasa doble number that was choreographed by renowned cultural dance guru Rommel Serrano; and Vianca Louise Rivera Marcelo who did a routine of magic tricks that were flawlessly executed including a jaw-dropping final routine where her red attire was transformed into a white dress in a snap. If I had my way, I would declare them as co-winners.
Honorable mention go to several bets: Avolea Paraiso playing a popular song on the harp; an authentic Mindanao tribal dance with Chinese influence by Emma Mary Tiglao; and a nationalistic “Isang Lahi” dance interpretation by Kiara Giel Gregorio.
