MISS Indonesia, Ariska Putri Pertiwi, 21, from Medan, Sumatra, was crowned as Miss Grand International 2016, edging out Bb. Pilipinas-Grand International Nicole Ignacio Cordoves, 24, from Manila, who ended up as the first runner-up, at the international tilt’s 4th annual coronation night held at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada Tuesday night (yesterday morning PH time).

Pertiwi, who is studying to be a doctor, was crowned by Claire Elizabeth Parker from Australia, last year’s winner, to become the first Indonesian woman to win a major international beauty pageant.
“Indonesia, we did it!” Pertiwi exclaimed after being crowned as winner.

Aside from Cordoves, the other runners-up were Miss Thailand Supaporn Malisorn, second; Miss Puerto Rico Madison Sara Anderson, third; and Miss USA Michelle Gabriela Leon, fourth.
For the final question, the finalists were asked who they would choose – Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton – to partner with to end war and violence.

Pertiwi said she would choose Clinton, calling her “wise.” Miss Philippines and Miss USA chose Trump while Miss Thailand and Miss Puerto Rico also chose Clinton.

“If we chose him (Trump) on our side, there will be no wars and violence anymore,” Cordoves said.
Miss Grand International was initiated in Bangkok, Thailand in 2013 with a mission to “stop the wars in the world.” It has generated so much publicity that it is already being ranked alongside big-league pageants like Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth.

Nicole Cordoves is the second Bb. Pilipinas titlist to place in an international pageant this year. Last October 16, Bb. Pilipinas-Intercontinental Jennifer Ruth Hammond placed among the 15 semi-finalists at the Miss Intercontinental finals held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Tomorrow, October 27, Bb. Pilipinas-International Kylie Verzosa will vie for the 56th Miss International Pageant in Tokyo, Japan.

Bb. Pilipinas-Globe Nichole Manalo will vie for Miss Globe in Albania next month while Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational Joanna Eden will compete for Miss Supranational in Poland in December. Miss Universe-Philippines Maxine Medina will be the host delegate for the 65th Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Manila on January 30, 2017.
