Fil-British beauty from Cam Sur leads Bb. Pilipinas 2017 winners
FILIPINO-BRITISH beauty Rachel Obregon Peters from Camarines Sur was crowned as Miss Universe Philippines 2017 and led 8 other winners at the finale of the 54th Binibining Pilipinas Pageant held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Sunday night.
Peters, a 25-year-old, 5’9” graduate of International Baccalaureate at the British School in Phuket, Thailand and has a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Tourism and Events from La Trobe University in Australia, was crowned by last year’s winner and Miss Universe 2016 top 6 finalist Maxine Medina.
When asked during the interview round what would have been her message to the leaders who attended the recent ASEAN summit if she were invited as speaker, Peters replied: “I believe one of the biggest problems that our country is facing today is divisiveness in politics, in religion and also in culture. And I believe that it is something that is the same across the world. And that is something I would want to address. I believe that when people can learn to tolerate each other’s differences and respect each other’s opinions, then we will just be a stronger nation and world.” Her answer elicited resounding applause from the audience.
Peters also won three special awards: Miss Photogenic, Best in Swimsuit and She’s So Jag.
The Bb. Pilipinas-International 2017 title went to Ma. Angelica “Mariel” Andolong de Leon, 23, from Las Piñas City, improving on her semi-final finish at the 50th edition of the pageant in 2013. The 5’8” classical opera singer and daughter of actors Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong was crowned by last year’s winner and reigning Miss International Kylie Verzosa.
When asked “What activity perceived to be male-oriented can you do better?” Mariel answered: "Well, I think I can box better than males. I believe I can do everything better than males because it isn't about gender at all. It's about abilities, your strengths, your weaknesses, and your confidence within yourself, and with that, you can achieve anything."
Mariel also took home the Best in Evening Gown and Miss Creamsilk awards.
The other winners were: Elizabeth Dorado Clenci, 26, a Filipino-Romanian full-time bassist who was born in Canberra, Australia and represented her mother’s hometown of Mandaue City, Bb. Pilipinas-Grand International 2017; Chanel Olive Villamayor Thomas, 26, a half-Australian model and host from San Antonio, Nueva Ecija, Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational 2017; Katarina Sonja Rodriguez, 24, a model and competitive long distance runner from Davao City, Bb. Pilipinas-Intercontinental 2017; and Nelda Cunan Ibe, 24, a cadel pilot of Alpha Aviations Group Philippines and BA English Literature graduate of Tarlac State University, Bb. Pilipinas-Globe 2017.
Named as first and second runners-up, respectively were: Charmaine Francisco Elima, 24, a flight attandant of Philippine Airlines from Binangonan, Rizal; and Kristel Nones Guelos, 24, a dentist from Tanauan City.
The winners came from 15 semi-finalists and a first cut of 25 from an original field of 40 contestants. The top 25 competed in swimsuits and evening gowns while the top 15 went through the question-and-answer round.
The judges included actor Paulo Avelino, CNN Philippines news anchor Mitzi Borromeo, Brazilian Ambassador Rodrigo Souza, chief operations officer of BPI Holdings Inc. Phil Reed, veteran news anchor Ted Failon, current head of ABS-CBN marketing Nandy Villar, former volleyball star-turned-Kapamilya host Gretchen Ho, European Union ambassador Franz Jessen, and PLDT-Smart Chief Revenue Officer and ePLDT President & CEO Eric Alberto.
The 5-hour pageant, hosted by Xian Lim, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj, extended way past 1:00 AM Monday when the telecast caught up with the live show at the Big Dome.
Entertainment numbers were provided by Daniel Padilla, Jay-Ar, Jayson Dy and Daryl Ong.

Jollibee, Miss Universe 2016 candidates share joy and inspiration
Jollibee, Miss Universe 2016 candidates share joy and inspiration
PH’s top fast-food brand and the universe’s loveliest women team up for an afternoon of laughter, beauty, and Chickenjoy dedicated for the girls of Concordia Children’s Service
The Jollibee Marketing Team, led by Francis E. Flores, with the candidates of the 65th Miss Universe Competition |
The Philippines’ number one fast-food chain, Jollibee, has always dedicated its efforts to bring joy to Filipinos of all ages, wherever they are in the world. In line with this commitment, Jollibee—together with the Miss Universe Organization—brought an afternoon of joy and inspiration to young orphaned girls from the Concordia Children’s Services.
Twenty-two candidates of the 65th Miss Universe Competition graced Jollibee’s Blue Bay branch last January 23, 2017 to get to know the Concordia girls through a shared meal of Jolly favorites.
The Philippines’ very own representative was joined by Miss Australia, Miss Barbados, Miss Brazil, Miss British Virgin Islands, Miss Canada, Miss China, Miss Colombia, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss France, Miss Indonesia, Miss Malaysia, Miss New Zealand, Miss Nicaragua, Miss Peru, Miss Sierra Leone, Miss Spain, Miss Thailand, Miss Uruguay, Miss USA, Miss Venezuela, and Miss Vietnam.
“Jollibee aims to bring joy around the world, especially for children, and help brighten their lives so they can be agents of change,” said Francis E. Flores, Jollibee Global Chief Marketing Officer and Philippines Head of Marketing. “With Miss Universe, we found a kindred institution with the goal to inspire and empower young people.”
The Miss Universe Organization is an advocate of real, positive change in the world, starting with empowering young women to initiate advocacies in their local communities with the potential to reach a global audience.
Based in Sta. Mesa, Manila, Concordia Children’s Services is a safe haven for over 100 vulnerable children who have suffered through abandonment and neglect. Staffed by empathetic social workers, the organization works with orphaned and abandoned children to ensure that they will grow up with a proper education, dignity, and accountability.
The fast-food chain believe that meeting the Miss Universe candidates will be instrumental in the personal development of the Concordia girls, who need positive role models to inspire them to become truly confidently beautiful inside and out.
The children and Miss Universe candidates spent the whole afternoon sharing stories, laughing, and enjoying Jollibee’s best-tasting Chickenjoy—the favorite crispylicious, juicylicious, and gravylicious fried chicken of Pinoys the world over. Toward the end of the event, the ladies handed out Jollibee Blush Dolls to their newfound young friends.
Aside from collaborating for a shared advocacy, Jollibee also saw the intimate charity event to give the candidates a true Filipino welcome: with stories, laughter, and Chickenjoy.
“Jollibee shares our country’s desire to show off the best of Filipino destinations, artistry, food, and experiences to the most beautiful women of the universe,” added Flores. “Like the candidates who are representatives of their respective countries, Jollibee represents something truly Filipino. Our products, stores, and even our mascot are national icons in their own right, and a source of pride for millions of Pinoys.”
Over the years, Jollibee’s efforts to reflect the best of Filipino values have brought it market leadership and a special place in the hearts of every Filipino family. The brand’s 993 stores all over the country are favorite destinations for Filipinos of all ages, where they enjoy quality bonding time and share delicious meals. By mid-2017, Jollibee will reach an important milestone: its 1,000th store in the Philippines.
To date, Jollibee has a fast-expanding international network of stores and is an emerging major QSR player in the world. As of November 30, 2016, Jollibee has 81 stores in Vietnam, 34 in the United States, 14 in Brunei, 10 in Saudi Arabia, three in Hong Kong, one in Bahrain, and four each in Qatar, Kuwait, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. This achievement is a source of national pride for many Filipinos living and working abroad, who get to share the inimitable Jollibee experience with their families, friends, and colleagues of different nationalities.
The fast-food chain is known for a wide variety of best-selling products tailored to fit Filipino palates, including its flagship offering Chickenjoy, the Yum! Burger, Burger Steak, Peach Mango Pie, and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach’s favorite snack, the Jolly Hotdog.
“Jollibee will continue on its mission to bring joy and remain as a strong icon of Filipino pride,” concluded Flores. “It is our honor to share the joy and the Philippines’ best with the most beautiful women in the universe.”
Check out the joy and excitement of the #65thMissUniverse candidates when they visited Jollibee through the hashtag #MissUatJollibee! Like Jollibee Philippines on Facebook or follow @jollibee on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.

Governor's Ball kicks off 65th Miss Universe Competition charity drive
One the most exclusive events that are part of the run-up to the Miss Universe Competition will happen at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City this January 16th.
The Governor's Ball, named after former Ilocos Sur governor Luis "Chavit" Singson (LCS), is a special gala where members of high society get an opportunity to have a close encounter with the beauty candidates of the 65th Miss Universe in black-tie dinner, which features entertainment by exceptional performances from world-class talents.
Singson's LCS Group will lead this extraordinary gathering and is expected to be joined by top executives from his major partners at the Miss Universe Competition: Okada Manila, Solar Entertainment Inc., and SM Lifestyle Entertainment Corp.; sponsors: Philippine Airlines and Pass It Forward; and regional sponsors: JPark Island Resort and Waterworld Cebu, and the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio. Select current and former representatives from government are likely to be invited, as well as officials from the Miss Universe Organization (MUO).
An integral component to its operations, the MUO has always advocated worthy causes such as the global fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In keeping with the pageant's traditions, they also encourage pageant winners and host countries to likewise support their chosen charities.
Singson, the man whose remarkable vision was to bring the annual beauty competition back home to the Philippines, will use the Governor's Ball as a way to bring together his staunchest pageant supporters while rolling out the red carpet for their international guests at a private and very upscale fundraiser.
The Governor's Ball will also be an avenue for campaign awareness of Pass It Forward (PIF), a philanthropic outfit that acts similarly like a charitable "market place," facilitating the engagement between givers (individuals, corporations, and foundations) and receivers (charities) to come together.
"The Governor’s Ball will be an opportunity to showcase to those who attend how they can make a positive change in the community," said Pass It Forward Managing Director Terry Alan Farris. "If we could get 1% of the viewers of the Miss Universe to give back and support the nonprofits of the Philippines, think of the impact we can make."
To date, nonprofits like Gawad Kalinga, the ABS-CBN Foundation, Philippine Red Cross, and others have been the primary recipients of the Pass It Forward charities. For years, Singson has been PIF's main benefactor.
"I've maintained a long-term relationship with the Pass It Forward because the idea of building capacities for all nonprofit organizations in the Philippines – instead of just focusing on a few – appeals to me," said Governor Singson. "I promise the Governor's Ball to be quite an evening, but I'm also hopeful that my friends' generosity will help my advocacy in Pass It Forward be just as successful."
