Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach to be honored with PHLPost stamps

Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach to be honored with PHLPost stamps
By JAY PATAO
THE Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will issue a commemorative stamp in honor of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who won the country’s third Miss Universe title at the 64th edition of the beauty pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada last December 20, 2015.

PHLPost Marketing Management & Support Services head Enrique Tagle said that the PHLPost board of directors has agreed unanimously on January 11 to issue the stamp.
Wurtzbach , 26, a Filipino-German actress and model who was born in Stuttgart, Germany and grew up in Cagayan de Oro City, will be the fourth Filipina world beauty queen to be honored with a PHLPost stamp.

Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz and Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran were honored with commemorative stamps in 1994 when the Philippines hosted the 43rd Miss Universe Pageant.
On March 24, 2014, Megan Young was also honored with her own stamps after becoming the first Filipina to bag the Miss World crown in Bali, Indonesia in 2013. PHLPost printed 80,000 regular stamps, 7,000 souvenir sheets and 7,000 first day covers of the beauty queen’s stamp.

It is not yet known how many stamps will be printed in honor of Wurtzbach, or if the stamps will be printed in time for the beauty queen’s grand homecoming on January 23.
Wurtzbach is scheduled to arrive in Manila on January 23 for her week-long grand homecoming. She’ll be flying in from Jakarta where she will crown Miss Universe-Indonesia 2016 and will return to New York City (where the Miss Universe Organization is based) on January 31.

Roanne Refrea vies for Miss Tourism World 2016 in Malacca City

Roanne Refrea vies for Miss Tourism World 2016 in Malacca City

By JAY PATAO
TOMORROW night in the heritage city of Malacca in Malaysia, Miss Tourism World-Philippines 2015 Roanne Samonte Refrea will compete against 51 other delegates worldwide for the coveted Miss Tourism World 2016 crown.

Roanne, 25, a BS Entreprenurial Management graduate of San Beda College, will attempt to nail the Philippines’ third Miss Tourism World title, after Suzanne Park Fahling, who won the crown in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1995, and Michelle Cueva Reyes, who won in Istanbul, Turkey in 2002.
Interestingly, Fahling and Reyes are both Bb. Pilipinas 1st runner-up placers in 1989 and 2001, respectively.

Roanne, a native of Cabuyao City, Laguna, first competed at the Miss Philippines-Earth 2014 pageant where she won the gold medal in the talent competition and the Maynilad award for her advocacy of sustainable rain water collection.
At the Miss Tourism Philippines Pageant last year, Roanne also won the lion’s share of special awards including Best in Swimsuit, Best in Long Gown and Darling of the Press.
“I’m pressured, since I am the last of my co-titlists in Miss Tourism Philippines to compete. But I take it as a challenge to do well and represent our country with honor and pride, and I’m counting on your support and prayers,” Roanne said during her sendoff press conference last December at the Novotel Manila Hotel in Quezon City, that also coincided with the launching of the 2016 Miss Tourism Philippines Pageant headed by its founder Francisco “Gareth” Blanco.
Roanne’s co-winners performed well in their respective pageants abroad: Alexandra Mae Rosales was 1st runner-up at the South East Asian Tourism Ambassadress Pageant in Malaysia; Rianne Kalaw won the Miss Asia award at the Miss Tourism Universe tilt in Lebanon; and Leidda Paulette Babasanta won the Best National Costume award at the Miss All Nations pageant in China.
Roanne has been having a wonderful time touring Malacca City, the heritage town (not unlike our very own Vigan City), that is a preserved community of centuries-old buildings that reflects Malaysia’s colonial past.

Pageant Watch wishes Roanne Refrea all the best…may you usher in the New Year with a victory at Miss Tourism World.

World-class Pinay beauties & world-class Pinoy designers: Perfect combination!

World-class Pinay beauties & world-class Pinoy designers: Perfect combination!
By JAY PATAO
LAST YEAR, Filipinos proudly savored the feats of Filipina beauty queens who stormed the international pageant arena in historic fashion and showcased the innate beauty, grace and substance that world-class Pinays are made of.

Dressed up in shimmering evening gowns by internationally-acclaimed Filipino designers, they glided glamorously and impeccably on the world stage as the whole world watched and appreciated the Filipino’s fashion sense and style.

Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism 2014 Parul Shah wore a red streamlined silhouette with a flowing skirt at the 3rd Miss Supranational Pageant in Bangkok last October 25, a creation by Filipino-American designer Mark Bumgarner who discovered his passion for fashion after traveling the world as a race car driver. Parul finished as third runner-up and also won the Best National Costume award for a gold emsemble by award-winning designer Edwin Uy.

Bb. Pilipinas-International 2015 Janicel Lubina wore a shimmering white serpentine gown with a long tulle train at the 55th Miss International Pageant in Tokyo last November 5. The gown is a creation of award-winning couturier Leo Almodal, a veteran fashion designer who grew up in a family of dressmakers and tailors and who now caters to countries in North America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe. Janicel made it to as a top 10 finalist and won the Miss Best Dresser award (equivalent of Best in Evening Gown).

Almodal also dressed Miss Philippines-Earth 2015 Angelia Gabrena Ong at the 15th Miss Earth Pageant in Vienna, Austria last December 5. Angelia’s beaded champagne gown definitely helped her triumph as the third Pinay to win the coveted crown, succeeding another Filipina Jamie Herrell for a back-to-back victory by the country, a first in Miss Earth history. Ong also wore another Almodal creation for the preliminary long gown competition that earned her a bronze medal (third place).
Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational 2015 Rogelie Catacutan wore an elaborate black gown by Cebu’s top designer Cary Santiago at the 7th Miss Supranational Pageant in Poland en route making it as a top 20 finalist. Cary, who started drawing dress patterns before he went to school, has successfully made a name as a designer in Dubai and is now the go-to couturier of celebrities.

And last December 20 in Las Vegas, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach ended the country’s 42-year quest for its third Miss Universe title, winning the coveted crown in a “non-traditional”, yet unmistakable way. Pia was glamorous in a red-tomato creation by Bataan-born and now Los Angeles-based “red carpet” designer Oliver Tolentino during the pageant’s preliminary competitions last December 17.
At the finals on December 20, Pia was unmistakably a picture of poise and pulchritude in a royal blue satin creation by Albert Andrada who made a name internationally as the fashion designer of the ruling family of the Emirate of Fujairah (UAE) for 10 years. Now an established name in Manila, Andrada is now an established name in Manila and his royal credentials has rubbed on the latest toast of beauty queendom – Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach.

MUTYA ng Pilipinas-Asia Pacific International 2015 Leren Mae Magnaye Bautista, 23, arrived last Saturday from Malaysia after winning the Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2015-2016 last New Year’s Eve at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya, south of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
Leren was welcomed at the airport by Mutya ng Pilipinas Pageant officials, her family including her mother Letty Magnaye-Bautista, and members of media.

Bautista, a 5’8” beauty from Los BaƱos, Laguna, bested 56 other delegates worldwide succeeding Warangkanang Wutthayakorn of Thailand and became the third Filipina to win the coveted crown after Sheryl Capili Santarin (1996) and Racquel Tentoco Uy (1999).

For the final coronation night, Bautista wore a beaded yellow gold evening gown and a Filipiniana costume made from bamboo tubes, both creations of San Pablo City designer Chico Estiva.
Four subtitles were also awarded to Uganda’s Sheila Kirabo (Miss Tourism Metropolitan International), Lithuania’s Irmina Presegalaviciute (Miss Tourism Global International), Icelands’s Tanya Yr Asthorsdottir (Miss Tourism Cosmopolitan International) and India’s Chandhi Sharma (Dream Girl of the Year International).

A Marketing Management graduate of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba, Bautista held the title of Binibining Laguna in 2014 before winning at the Mutya ng Pilipinas Pageant last August en route to her victorious campaign in Malaysia. She also won two special awards: Miss Trendsetter and Best in Catwalk.

Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International is one of two major pageants organized by D’Touch Productions under Malaysian impresario Tan Sri Datuk Danny Ooi, the other being Miss Tourism International which the Philippines has also won thrice: in 2000, 2012 and 2013.
With the Malaysia pageant culminating on New Year’s Eve, Bautista capped 2015 following historic victories in other pageant fronts namely: Ann Lorraine Colis, Miss Globe 2015 in Toronto, Canada last October 8; Angelia Gabrena Ong, Miss Earth 2015 in Vienna, Austria last December 5; and Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who became the third Filipina Miss Universe in Las Vegas last December 20.
Wurtzbach, who is now based in the Miss Universe Organization’s headquarters in New York City, is expected to return to Manila for a grand homecoming later this month.
